Welcome to Richard Nutting Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been practiced in different parts of the world for thousands of years, especially in China. The Chinese make up roughly a quarter of the population of the world. Could such a form of medicine have survived for so long, without being of any benefit to mankind?

Traditional acupuncture places great emphasis on drawing a pattern of any particular presenting disease and relating this to the individual, to find the underlying cause of the disharmony. This is why information is required from each patient relating to not just physical and emotional issues, but deeper issues that make up the very character and spirit of the individual. With over 300 acupuncture points to choose from, treatments can very individualized ,which reflects this idea that no two patterns of disease and therefore no two individuals, are exactly the same.

Acupuncture works by stimulating very specific points on the body, which lie on meridians of energy that flow close to the surface of the skin.

The needles themselves are not much thicker than a single hair. Acupuncture is not painful, with discomfort being kept to a minimum. Patients can expect to feel a tingling or drawing sensation after the needles have been inserted, as they work together to re-balance the yin and yang energies of the body. The great majority of patients find it very relaxing and many have been known to fall asleep during treatments.

Today acupuncture is becoming increasingly accepted by the medical establishment. A survey of GPs by the BMA noted that acupuncture is most popular complimentary therapy among those used by 5 million people each year and that four out of five GPs favored it being made available on the NHS. A few years ago, in what was reported as possibly the most rigorous and controlled piece of research ever conducted on any complimentary therapy , it was proven that acupuncture can help osteoarthritis of the knee.
